Follow up on Practice Fusion switch

Just wanted to give an update on switching from Practice Fusion.  I was able to get a full data download from Practice Fusion without too much angst.  The download includes all documents, all encounters, demographics, PMH, meds, etc.  You have to send in a notarized letter to Practice Fusion with specific information that they request and I got my full data download in about 8 weeks.  They will not close your account after you get the download and you will have read only access to your account as long as you keep your login credentials.

Even though talkEHR was just released in June and has many glitches, I decided to go with them after looking at the other free EHRs (one touch EHR and the open source EHR) because they do have speech recognition to dictate your notes.  The EHR is far from perfect but they allowed me to eprescribe controlled substances for free and also helped me set up a lab interface with Quest.  They have been working with me to import all my practice fusion data and I think we are almost there.  Their business model is to let the practitioner to use talkEHR free in hopes that you will use their integrated billing service for a reasonable percentage (2-5 percent depending on how many features you want with billing). I have not used their billing service yet because it has been a big enough challenge to switch EHRs.  They are pretty responsive to questions through their single help phone line or via email.  Overall, I don't feel it is as good as Practice Fusion yet but it is usable and their support is very helpful in trying to get me up and running quickly.  The parent company, MTBC, has been in the medical billing business for more than 10 years but this is their first attempt at an integrated EHR with their billing management system.  Hope this helps for those looking to switch from Practice Fusion to a low cost EHR.

I heard about ChARM EMR. It is free is less than 50 encounters/month.

I have not looked at this EMR yet- so don't know more details.
