I have not yet signed up with an ACO, but have been told that it can be beneficial. For those of you who have joined an ACO- do you have any advice on how to choose the right one for your practice? Thanks in advance.

I would look closely at how they divide any money they get from Medicare.  In my opinion all the value comes from primary care efforts so at least 80% of the money should be distributed to primary care docs in the network.  Unfortunately, many hospitals set up an ACO and keep most of the savings for themselves.  If the representative can't simply explain where the money goes, then I would try to find another organization.

If they are in a risk contract you would want to know how much risk you are taking by looking at past performance of the ACO.  If the ACO performs poorly then you can end up owing them money.

    Dr. Reynolds,
i have been a member of Innovation Care Partners (formerly Scottsdale Health Partners) since 2012.  I'm happy to answer any questions you have concerning this ACO specifically if you are considering joining.  You can email me at rajesh@sonifamilymedicine.com.
